How to choose a squeeze tube material: extruded vs laminate

The two big tube constructions look similar on a shelf. They behave very differently with sensitive formulas, premium decoration, and recycling streams.

    Extruded plastic tubes

Made by extruding a single resin, typically HDPE, LDPE, PCR or Bio-PE, into a seamless cylinder, then welding on a shoulder and head. One material, fully mono-material, recyclable in standard streams.

Best for skincare, body care, haircare and personal care formulas that don't need an oxygen or flavor barrier. Sidewalls have a slight curve, so very fine type or wraparound art needs accommodating.

    • Mono-material, recyclable in #2/#4 streams
    • MOQ from 5,000 units per SKU
    • Lead time ~10 weeks from approved artwork
    • Best decoration: silkscreen, hot stamp, offset

ABL laminate tubes (Aluminum Barrier Laminate)

A flat multi-layer sheet, typically PE / aluminum foil / PE, printed flat, then rolled and side-seamed into a tube. The aluminum layer is a true oxygen, light and flavor barrier, which is why almost every toothpaste tube on earth is laminate.

Because it's printed flat before forming, you get billboard-quality decoration with no shoulder distortion. Sidewalls sit straighter, which makes premium brands look more like a folding carton wrapped in plastic.

    • True barrier for oxygen-sensitive, fluoride or flavored formulas
    • Flat-sheet printing, sharp type, full bleeds, gradients
    • Trade-off: aluminum layer disqualifies from most curbside recycling
    • PBL (plastic barrier laminate) variants now exist for recycling compatibility

    Quick decision matrix

Default to extruded plastic. Switch to laminate when one of three things is true: the formula needs a real oxygen/flavor barrier (toothpaste, certain actives, pharma); the decoration needs to be billboard-grade (luxury, prestige, masstige); or the category convention demands it (oral care).

    Takeaway

Extruded plastic tubes win on simplicity, recyclability and cost. Laminate tubes win on barrier protection, flat sidewalls for decoration, and that premium 'toothpaste tube' feel.
